4X4 ROUTE

You'd be correct in expecting a steep rocky ascent and descent at Tierkloof, but the surprise sting in the tail is the soft sand challenge.

Although the trail covers only 12km, there's plenty to keep off-road adventurers amused, starting with a rocky climb that will be a sweaty-palmed, white-knuckled experience for rookies and a challenge for seasoned campaigners.

The fun begins almost immediately after you turn off the main road, with a 5km mountain ascent littered with huge boulders and a gap between looming rocks where marshalling is recommended.

Your reward on reaching the Bloukop view site +/- 780 meters high, is a magnificent panorama over Brandvlei Dam towards Worcester.

Taking another route down the mountain will confront you with a deep dive into a normally dry riverbed, some sandy sections and finally Tierkloof's sting in the tail, a daunting but safe climb in deep, soft sand that is very hard on normal road tire pressures.

Difficulty is rated 3.5-4/5.

It's advised to have some 4x4 experience, but it's doable without needing any special equipment.
